This still isn't finished, but I wanted to post an upgrade. The old unfinished version I moved to scraps, to keep it there if I or you or anyone wants to compare the different versions.
Advanced citique is still welcome but lighter comments are ok at this point

High contrast suits the picture, face seems more vivid and overall it feels stronger. (But it's good to be careful when modifying contrast in general, as you know, in some cases softness is better..)
It was also a good decision to change the shade of the clothing, or was this this on your mind from the beginning?
I think you have pretty good senses of using colours and contrast, as well as shading.
And- what you need now that you have Photoshop, is a good digital camera.
